When you are an adult with misaligned teeth, it can feel intimidating smiling in photos or even just among your friends. And, while there is a prevalent idea that to straighten your teeth as an adult requires metal braces, this is no longer the only option available. Thanks to advances in orthodontics and dentistry, it is now possible to get straighter teeth without orthodontic braces, using either invisible aligners or clear braces. Great!

At The Dental Retreat, our team has a wealth of knowledge and experience surrounding adult orthodontics, including the ever-popular Invisalign Macleod. We have helped many of our patients achieve a straighter smile using this invisible aligner, and with a quick consultation, we can assess if you are suitable for it.

But before booking that consultation, you will probably have some questions about the aligner, its process and to what extent it is effective. Here, we answer 5 of the most common questions we receive about Invisalign Macleod, so read on and enjoy.

How does it work?

As this aligner is made from plastic, it can be a bit puzzling to understand how it works.

When you come to us for treatment with Invisalign Macleod, we will take a 3D scan of your teeth and then send these images to a laboratory. Using technology to map how your teeth will need to move to get your desired end result, the technicians will then print aligners for you to wear. Using these in a set order, the aligners will push on the teeth, moving them gently into the positions needed until they feel loose, and the next aligner in the set is moved on to. Simple!

Is it uncomfortable?

As this aligner pushes the teeth as opposed to pulling them, they are considered by some to be more comfortable than other methods. Patients who have used both traditional braces and these aligners are often surprised at how relaxed these aligners are when it comes to moving teeth. Either way, this is certainly something that we can discuss with you during a consultation!

How long does it take?

On average, these aligners take between 3-6 months to realign teeth but how long it will take in your case will depend on the issue being treated and the severity.

Do I need to wear the aligner all day?

It is generally advised that when using an invisible aligner that you wear it as often as you can. We would generally advise that you wear it for a minimum of 22 hours per day. If you fail to do so, your teeth may cease moving and you may actually cause them to revert back to their former positions. If you are wearing the aligners for the allocated time each day and your teeth don’t seem to be moving appropriately, contact us for a check-up.

Is it expensive?

Many patients worry that adult orthodontic work is going to be expensive. However, at The Dental Retreat, we can offer suitable orthodontic patients financing options, helping you to break down the final cost into affordable monthly payments. Great stuff!
