One of the most common complaints many dental patients have is that their smiles are not white enough.

In most cases that we see, many people want to remove a bit of yellowing or staining and obtain a whiter, brighter smile. And it’s obvious to see why! Considering that most people judge others based on their smiles, having a whiter smile (or not) can be a big deal!

So, what are your options for getting whiter teeth that last?

When you come to The Dental Retreat, our team will be happy to offer you teeth whitening Macleod and will aim to meet your aesthetic goals with the treatment, whether you are looking for a more natural look or want that Hollywood glam!

However, if you are new to teeth whitening Macleod, you may have some questions before deciding on this treatment. And here, our team answers 5 queries that we have received in the past from our patients.

How do you whiten your patients’ teeth?

At The Dental Retreat, when we choose the method of teeth whitening Macleod to use, we will assess the underlying cause of the staining. Is it due to diet or high exposure to tannins? Or is it caused by medical issues?

If it is the former, we will aim to use bleaches, gels and more traditional whitening methods to whiten your teeth, which can be done either at our clinic or at home over two weeks using whitening trays.

If your discoloured teeth are caused by medical issues, the stains will likely be deeper set, so we will use abrasion whitening.

Does it cause sensitivity?

In some cases, you may experience heightened sensitivity for a few days; this is normal and due to the whitening process dehydrating the tooth.

However, when it comes to the gels and bleaches that we use, they generally do not cause issues with sensitivity as they have anti-sensitivity agents built into them.

However, if you already have sensitive teeth, please inform our team, and we will look into other whitening methods such as veneers or composite bonding.

Are over-the-counter whiteners as good?

No, over-the-counter whitening toothpaste and kits will not typically produce as good outcomes as professional whitening. The bleaching strength (the element that whitens the tooth) differs between at-home kits and the ones we use at our surgery, with the maximum bleach or hydrogen peroxide amount in over-the-counter kits being 3%. At our surgery, we use gels that have up to 60% hydrogen peroxide, so they are much more potent.

How long do the effects last?

The effects of dental whitening performed by our team can last anywhere from 3 months to 3 years because your diet and aftercare will play a large part. If you smoke, for example, you will need to be prepared for the effects of the whitening to be shorter than that of someone who doesn’t smoke.

How often can I have my teeth whitened?

Due to the high level of hydrogen peroxide in the bleaches that we use, our team would not recommend having your teeth whitened by us more than once a year.
