Dentistry and dental treatments: what do you need?
When it comes to having dental procedures performed, the root canal is sometimes considered an intimidating option among dental patients, and this shouldn’t be the case. Also known as endodontics, this procedure involves the removal of infected debris from the inside of an infected tooth. Using some very technical drilling and brushes, this procedure aims to restore the damaged tooth and keep your smile looking as glorious as ever. So, why do so many still consider it with apprehension?
At The Dental Retreat, our dentist Macleod believes that this is due in part to the prevalence of myths that surround this treatment on the internet. As technologies have advanced, it has become safer, cheaper and easier for our dental team to perform root canals, helping you to keep all of your teeth in your mouth as well as helping you to feel great when you smile.
But what are some of the most common myths that our dentist Macleod has heard about root canals and what is the truth? Read on to find out.
It kills the tooth
There is a myth that once you have had a root canal, your tooth turns black and ‘dies.’
Of course, in modern dental care, this does not happen! When our dentist Macleod performs a root canal, they are aiming to preserve the tooth whilst looking to remove the infection from inside the tooth. Once the treatment is complete, the tooth is sealed with filling material and the hole is concealed with a filling or a crown and is ready to use straight away.
It makes you ill
A root canal will not make you ill; in fact, it will make you feel better! Many patients when they come to our team needing a root canal are going through a dental abscess, which is not only uncomfortable but can be very draining on the body. By removing the infection, your body is now able to heal, helping you to feel better.
It is painful
All root canals, fillings and extractions are performed after you have been injected with a numbing agent; so you will feel little to nothing during the whole procedure. Once the treatment is completed and you are at home, you may feel a bruised sensation or some soreness as the numbing agent wears off, but this is completely normal anot nothing at all to worry about. If the discomfort persists for more than 3 days or worsens, you can call our team for further advice.
Extractions are easier
Extractions are faster than root canals but in the long term, you need to consider what is the best option for your specific case. Missing teeth can lead to plaque accumulation, issues with speech, aesthetic problems and the movement of surrounding teeth in your mouth due to the jawbone and gum line shrinking due to the missing tooth. So, to protect you against such issues, our team will always recommend a root canal wherever possible.
Root canals are not long-lasting
With correct hygiene and maintenance (such as biannual check-ups with our team), a root canal can last the rest of your life with no issues at all. Perfect!
