FAQs about teeth whitening answered

The majority of dental patients who visit cosmetic dentists have the same issue, they simply want their teeth to be whiter. While there is nothing inherently wrong with not having gleaming white teeth, it is seen as a status symbol by many and associated with the wealth and glamour of Hollywood.

At The Dental Retreat, our team aims to offer teeth whitening Macleod to all of our suitable patients. We will always endeavour to provide a more natural-looking whitening effect unless you specifically ask for one that looks a little bit brighter. The process will usually occur over two weeks. After which, you will be sent home with a set of trays and top-up whitening gels.

But for all the popularity of teeth whitening Macleod, the majority of people who want to undertake it want to know a bit more about the procedure, and in this article, our team offers answers to the most common questions that we receive.

What kinds of dental whitening are there?

Our team at The Dental Retreat will offer two different types of teeth whitening Macleod. The first is bleach-based and is suitable for people who have external stains caused by things like coffee. The second is abrasion based, which is more suitable for people who have discolouration of their teeth due to medical conditions or medications taken in childhood which have permanently stained the enamel.

When you come to our team, we will assess which type of staining you have and will devise a treatment plan based on this.

Will it cause my teeth to hurt?

It has long been held that having your teeth professionally whitened causes them to hurt, but thanks to the modern ingredients used in dental bleaches, this is no longer the case. You can have your teeth brightened without excessive sensitivity afterwards. The sensitivity is caused by dehydration of the tooth which is part of the stain removal process, but we will always aim to ensure that you experience minimal discomfort afterwards.

How often can I have this performed?

You can have your teeth professionally whitened around twice a year if need be, but for the majority of people it is not required that often. As mentioned briefly before, our team will provide you with a set of customised trays and whitening gels to use at home, so you can top up the effects that you got in the surgery. Also, if you have recently had a root canal performed, it is generally advised that you do not undertake dental whitening for a few months as the tooth and the surrounding nerves will need to heal.

How can I keep my teeth white?

Aside from using the kits that our dental team sent you home with, you can keep your teeth white by avoiding drinking coffee, and smoking and of course by avoiding foods and drinks that are higher in tannins. Tannins are particularly tricky to remove at home, as they are easily absorbed by the porous enamel of teeth.

Are at-home kits as good?

You can experience minimal dental whitening using an at-home kit, but it’s worth noting that the active ingredient in whitening kits (which is hydrogen peroxide) will be lower in concentration. So, if you want to get a gleaming smile, your best bet is to visit our team.
