Gum Disease in Macleod

Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is an infection of the gum tissues and is usually caused by a build-up of plaque on your teeth that extends to or below the gum line. Plaque build-up harbours bacteria which irritate the gums leading to inflammation, redness and frequent bleeding of gums especially while brushing. Hardened plaque is also known as Calculus or Tartar.

If gum disease is left untreated it could progress to a more severe form known as periodontitis. When Periodontitis is left untreated it can increase the severity of bad breath causing gum swelling, abscess and further weakens your teeth. Progression of the disease over time can lead to bone loss, recession of gums, mobility of teeth resulting in the loss of one or multiple teeth.

Treatment for Gum Disease

At your regular check-up with The Dental Retreat, our Dentist look for signs of gum disease and recommend professional cleaning of your teeth, which may also need x-rays to monitor progress. During your regular check-up and clean visits, your dentist will remove plaque and tartar and discuss the necessary home care required. You may also need further treatment depending on the extent of your gum health.

Apart from your regular dental check-up and cleans, we also recommend brushing your teeth and along the gum line gently twice daily with a soft toothbrush, which can be either using a manual or electric toothbrush based on your individual preference.
